Learning

Avocards is based on flashcards, in order to learn new words, you will need to add cards to your own deck. The green color is used for learning. From the home screen, click on “LEARN” tab on the top left of the screen.

Adding cards to your deck

From the home screen or the menu, you can select a topic to start a session. The session can be words related to a song, a category, a level, etc…

You will be proposed 15 cards per session. For each card, you will have 5 choice:

  • Skipping the cards, by swiping right or left if you don’t want to learn it
  • Don’t know, if you want to add the card to your deck and learn it but you don’t know it yet
  • Recognized, if you want to learn the card, you have seen the word a few times, but you have not memorized it yet
  • Memorized, if you want to learn the card, you can recognize and understand the word, but you can’t use it on your own
  • Mastered, if you want to learn the cards, when you can use it when you talk

Filtering

During a learning session, you can type the top right icon to filter the words that you want to learn.

You can select if you want to:

  • Learn New Words
  • Review Words
  • Do Both

You can choose the difficulty:

  • Beginner
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

You can choose the type of word:

  • Verb
  • Noun
  • Adjective
  • Adverb
  • Pronoun

Click Start to restart the session with the chosen filters.

Cards

Cards are composed of different elements.

Front of the card:

  1. The Korean word to learn
  2. The Korean word romanization
  3. The step of the words (new, don’t know, recognized, memorized, mastered)
  4. The type of the word (noun, verb, etc)
  5. The orignin of the word (Chinese character, English, etc..)
  6. If it is from a chinese character, the actual characters (hanja)
  7. The word translated in your language
  8. The korean definition of the word
  9. The definition translated in your language
  10. The current learning/reviewing session
  11. Extra category the word belongs to.
  12. Share this card with someone else

Back of the card:

  • Korean word and its romanization
  • Korean Examples with their translations
  • 3 dot menu:

From the menu you can report an issue with the translation or block the card if you don’t want to see it anymore.

Reviewing

In order to review words, you will need to first add cards to your own deck (see learning session above). The blue color is used for reviewing. From the home screen, click on “REVIEW” tab on the top right of the screen.

You can review in several different ways:

  • Classic card reviews
  • Write
  • Recognize
  • Match
  • Listen
  • All Quiz

Categories

Avocards offer more than 50 categories to learn. You can find categories on the home screen or go to the hamburger menu on the top left of the app and tap on categories to see the full list.

Create your own category

To create a custom category, go to the hamburger menu on the top left of the app and tap on categories. Then, tap on “Add a category”.

Enter the name of the category.

Then in the category page, you will see your new category appears. You can now add new words to this category.

In order to add words, tap the search box and search in English or Korean for a word to add. Once you find the word you want to add, simply click on it and click on “Add word to your category”. Select your category. The word is now added. Repeat the operation to add more words.

Community Categories

These are categories that any Avocards user can create and share with others. You can also learn from these categories.

How to publish your categories

In order to publish your category, you will need to have at least 10 words in your category.

Once you have more than 10 words and you are ready to publish, go to menu, category and long press on your category name. Select the “Publish to community” option.

Note that the offensive category names or user names won’t be added as it is against our principles of inclusion and respect.

Share your categories with friends

Once you have more than 10 words and you are ready to share, go to menu, category and long press on your category name. Select the “Share” option and choose how you want to share your category.

When you friend will click on the link after they have the app installed, they will be able to see your category. They can now click on “Add to my categories” button to start learning it.

Consume categories

Go to menu, category and click on the bottom button “Community category”, you will see a list of categories made by the community. You can click on any category to see its content. Once you find a category you like, simply click on it and click on “Add to my categories”. It will now be added to your categories in the category page.

Note that you can only add 3 community categories to your categories. If you want to have more, you need to upgrade your account to premium.

K-Pop

Learn from your favorite Korean song. Lyrics are transformed into cards that you can learn and review.

Go to Menu > K-pop, select an artist and a song.

The upper part of the screen is the music video, the lower part are the cards. You can swipe the cards to follow the lyrics.

You can also click on a card to see it in full screen an be able to look at the examples.

Finally, you can click on the green card button to learn start a learning session with all the cards from the song lyrics.

Test your Korean

You can check how many Korean words you know by going in Menu > Test your Korean.

You will be given a list of words and you will need to self-evaluate your knowledge. Trying to guess the word, tapping on the eye to validate your guess and either swiping left if you did not know it or right if you knew the words.

At the end of the set, you will be given an estimate of how many words your know by level.

Settings

Changing language

Simply click on What is your main language? under language section, then select your language. You will need to redownload the cards.

Theme

Premium users can switch between light and dark mode by clicking on light/dark mode under Theme section

Card Display

In this section you will be able to customize the visual of the cards. Especially, you can display or hide most of the different elements.

Sound

You can remove the auto-play or switch between real voice and machine text to speech. Especially if your network connection is weak, you may want to switch to machine voice.

Notifications

You can turn on/off any specific notification or all of them.

Daily goal points

Choose your daily goal points.

Display romanization

Do you want to display the romanization under the Korean characters or do you want to only have the Korean characters?

Sync data

Data is sync on every launch. You can force a sync on clicking here.

Review - skip after 5 seconds

Automatically, skip after 5 seconds when you guessed right.

Learn - skip after 5 seconds

Automatically, skip cards after 5 seconds when you learn. (Hands free).

Reset

Forget all cards you have previously leaned. Be careful, this can’t be undone. You will lose your current progress.

See blocked cards

There are 2 ways to block cards:

  • From Categories > Search > click and Block the card
  • When swiping, click on the card to see its back and click on the 3 dot menu and click on Block.

Blocked cards won’t be displayed anymore. If you want to see which cards you block or reinstantiate some, you can click here.
