About Avocards
Avocards was first release on the 18th June 2020 (Android) and later November 2021 ported to IOS. The app was conceived and developed by a single developer passionate about learning language and Korean.
Avocards is developed using native language Kotlin for Android and Swift for IOS.
How is Avocards different from other apps?
The app was first design to be a personal app to help myself learning more Korean. It came from different frustration I got with other apps on the market:
- First, some apps offer vocabulary lists that are often user made. Those list often contains typos, wrong translations and do not contain examples. I ended up learning lot of new words that I could never use because I would not know in which context it can be used.
Avocards flash cards are made from data from dictionaries. They are made by professional linguists, cards have sound from native speakers and several examples. The content is much richer and accurate than our competitors. Now you will be able to use the new words you learned.
- Other apps often contain list of unrelated vocabs. Once you learn hundreds or thousands of words. The next list will contain 30%, 60% , 90%? of words you will already know. I ended up wasting a lot of time constantly reviewing beginner words I knew.
Avocards flash cards are all unique and can only be learned once. All the lists, categories, songs we offer are based on the same cards. Once you learn a word from a card, you won’t have to learn it again in all the other lists through the app. Every time you open the app, you will learn something new and never waste your time.
- How many words do I know? It is a question I often asked myself. I want to measure my progress and my fluency toward my goal. Some apps list how many words you learned, counting every words from every list you learned. This is not accurate since many lists have duplicates. Also, what does it mean to know a word?
I realised that my brain is more complex than know/don’t know for words. Some words I clearly master and use often, some I clearly don’t know. This is true but then there are still many words that don’t belong to either of these categories. Some words I can recognize when my friend says them. However, I cannot use them by myself and I canot even remember them. Some other words, I learned once but I forgot them or I did not use them enough so I still memorized them but I cannot use them anymore. Avocards offer you a precise visualization of your brain and how many words you know at this exact moment. It is very rewarding to use it and see your progress.
- Learning unrelated words is boring. Learning by theme can be more fun but I personally love learning from my favorite songs. Avocards introduce list of flashcards based on songs. Invest some time learning those flashcards and next time you play your favorite song, you will understand it all. You can now learn with music.
